Anthonia Ikemeh
Early Childhood Educator/Teacher Candidate
I was born in Nigeria and migrated to Canada at age 11. My favourite things to do include reflecting through poetry, painting, drawing, crafting, going on walks/jogs and anything that has to do with being under the sun. I have been an early childhood educator for over 6 years, and I am strongly committed to supporting children and their families.

My pursuit of a career in education stems from the lack of support I received during my schooling, while growing up in Quebec and Ontario. This included, differentiated treatment, micro-aggression and racism from peers and teachers.

Daily Roles & Responsibilities?
I am passionate about anti-racism and decolonizing education, Indigenous ways of knowing and learning, cultural identity, African Indigenous studies and Black history. I believe that educators have a critical responsibility to actively engage in social justice issues. As educators, we are at a unique position to influence transformative change in our world, which begins with empowering students and their identities.
I regularly engage in projects to promote anti-racist education, including advocating for people from marginalized groups, through research, protests, professional development workshops and by spreading awareness on Black and Indigenous issues.
What advice would you give the 15-18 year old version of yourself?
My advice to my younger self would be: Believe in yourself and follow your heart. Do not wait for love to find you, instead love yourself. Lastly, remember you are only in competition with the person you were yesterday and no one else.
Below are a few quote that frame both my personal and professional philosophy.
“I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” – Mother Teresa
“Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into friend.” – Martin Luther King Jr
“You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” – Mahatma Gandhi
