Moe Ismail

CEO & Founder – Smart Communications Canada

I was born in St Petersburg Russia on April 15th 1993. Soon after I was born my family moved back to our home country, Sudan. We came to Canada when I was 7 years old in October 2000 looking for a better life and opportunity. Soon after our arrival, my father bought us our first family computer and I instantly fell in love. I would spend countless hours playing the games and exploring the many different files on the computer and seeing what it can do.

A couple years after that, we connected our computer to the internet and started exploring the world wide web. Ever since then I have always taken a deep interest in computers and would spend a lot of my down time taking them apart, putting them together, trying out new software and programming them. I always knew I wanted to work with computers ever since.

What is your educational background?
I attended the University of Ottawa. I originally wanted to study computer science but because I was committed to play on the Men’s Varsity Basketball Team my father advised me to choose a different program that wasn’t so demanding, so I chose to study Communications and Marketing. Upon graduating, I returned for an additional year of study at Brock University where I took courses in HTML and CSS coding so I could begin a career in Web Design and Digital Marketing.

What are your daily resposibilities?
Communicating with clients on a consistent basis to maintain a healthy business relationship Working on designing and developing websites for various clients Working on branding and marketing strategies to improve our own business as well as our clients businesses

What hurdles did you face?
Initially, when I started as a freelance web designer it was very hard to secure clients who were willing to pay a fair amount. I realized that people in your network will not vouch for you unless you prove that you can do what you say you can do at a high level. This reality hurt at the beginning but led me to pick up additional work in sales while I built my portfolio slowly. Once I started showing my work and progress, people began referring me to their peers.

What advice would you give to the 15 – 18 year old version of yourself?
Understand that confidence in what you’re doing stems from the hard work you put in. If you put in the hours, you performances will always show.

Believe in yourself.
