What is your educational background?
I have a BA in Criminal Justice from Holy Family University (Philadelphia, PA) and a Masters in Social Work from University of Windsor.

What are some of your daily roles and responsibilities?
I am currently on maternity leave but I work in a Parenting Program with Parents who have Intellectual Disabilities. I support them and their children with accessing social services and community based programs as well as help to implement parenting interventions. A large part of my role involves advocacy especially with the Children’s Aid and the school board, two historically oppressive systems. I also teach yoga classes part time and am the founder of Soulga, a wellness community that offers movement classes, education and mentorship opportunities for and by People of Colour.

What are some of the hurdles you faced on your path? Did you ever think about quitting?
I thought about quitting many times! I played college basketball in the States and struggled balancing my academic, social and athletic responsibilities. I had a very hard time transitioning from my life in the United States when I moved back home to Toronto and struggled finding a job that was meaningful. When I entered the yoga community I didn’t see many teachers that looked like me and that was very discouraging and isolating.

What advice would you give the 15-18year old version of yourself?
I would tell myself to listen to and learn from the elder women in my family. I was consumed with my friends and social life back then and really didn’t value and appreciate the wisdom and company of my mother until I left for University.
No matter how educated, talented, rich or cool you are, how you treat people ultimately tells all. Integrity is everything.
